Entry 169

Deep breathing worsens trauma responses say some psychologists. So, what do they mean by this?

If your trauma comes from bodily experiences then focusing on your body might make you feel unsafe. This would be for those who’ve experienced sexual assaults or medical trauma. This focus may cause your anxiety to be intensified.

Since many of us engage in breathing exercises when our heart starts racing and our breathing becomes rapid this is a valid point for some, but not all. According to the professionals if you’re having a panic attack it is not a good idea to take deep breaths.

There is another way to breathe that will help you though. Raphael can guide you.

“Raphael, in light and love, bring me ‘sighs’ that lighten me and support me when I find myself struggling to continue in a moment. Sighs have no rhythm or pattern - they just happen and that’s what I need you to help me with. Thank you, Raphael.”
